Extreme penetration from over-the-counter air and CO₂ guns in the popular 4.5 mm (.177) caliber!
When you fire a thin, sharp, hardened steel dart from an air or CO₂ gun with a maximum energy of 7.5 joules—instead of a soft, blunt lead pellet or a round steel ball—the effect on the target material changes dramatically.
Our tests impressively demonstrate the difference: In particularly dense ballistic gelatin, the high-penetration needles penetrated about 20 times deeper than conventional lead diabolos—approximately 20 cm instead of just 1 cm!
The darts also demonstrate exceptional penetration performance in hard target media. The reason for this is simple physics: the impact energy is concentrated on an extremely small area. At the same time, unlike a soft lead projectile, the hardened steel tip hardly deforms at all. As a result, comparatively little energy is lost due to the deformation of the projectile, and a large portion is available for penetration.
The Idea Behind the SixNeedler—Now in a 38-mm Format
The first firearm we designed specifically for such projectiles is the GoGun SixNeedler—a revolver capable of firing needles up to 130 mm in length.
Even before the SixNeedler could be launched in Germany, the legal regulations for unrestricted compressed-air and CO₂ firearms were changed. In other countries—such as the Netherlands, the U.S., Canada, and France—the SixNeedler, on the other hand, became a huge success. YouTubers from all over the world have reported on this unusual concept.
In Germany, new type approvals for multi-shot unrestricted compressed-air and CO₂ firearms are now subject to restrictions regarding the maximum projectile length that can be fired. However, there are still freely available firearms whose technical design allows for the use of longer projectiles.
These include, in addition to suitable single-shot break-barrel rifles and pistols, CO₂ revolvers and lever-action rifles in particular, which operate with cartridge-like loading sleeves.
These firearms are particularly popular precisely because the loading process closely resembles that of the live-fire original: Typically, a diabolo or BB is inserted into the loading sleeve. The entire sleeve is then loaded—just like a cartridge—into the revolver’s cylinder or the lever-action rifle’s tubular magazine.
That’s exactly why we developed the new 38-mm needle
The new GoGun High-Penetration needles in 4.5 mm caliber can be used in compatible firearms in place of a diabolo in appropriately sized cartridges.The result is astonishing.
Weighing just 0.35 grams, the new 38-mm needles are considerably lighter than the SixNeedler’s projectiles, which weigh about 1.4 grams. The lower mass allows for high velocities, while the significantly shorter needle offers considerably less surface area for friction within the target material.
Upon impact with softer target materials, the plastic cap can be stripped off. The actual steel needle then penetrates further into the target material with very little friction.
6 joules versus over 100 joules—with astonishing results
In our comparative test, the 38-mm needle fired from a CO₂ underlever rifle achieved a penetration depth of approximately 6 joules in the target material used—even greater than that of the tested .22 LR bullet, even though the latter was fired from a licensed rifle with over 100 joules of muzzle energy.
Of course, this does not mean that a 6-joule air gun is “more powerful” than a .22 LR rifle. The total energy transferred is considerably lower.
Rather, the test impressively demonstrates what is possible through the combination of hardened steel, a very small impact area, a small cross-sectional area, and minimal friction in the target medium.
